Apprenticeships at The Soleil Bookbindery are highly sought after and rarely available. For this reason, The Soleil Bookbindery has created a Certificate Programme designed to prepare a student for a degree programme in the book arts field.

Question: What is the difference between an Apprenticeship and the Certificate Programme?

The time that it takes to repair a book is determined by the parts of the book that need repair. Below is a comparison of two books, identical sizes but different requirements. No two books ever have the same repair requirements and these requirements change the price of the repair of a book.

Book 1. Small Bible. A soft cover Bible; front cover separated from its binding.

Suggested Repair: The spine would be removed and replaced with cloth or leather.

Cost to repair: Cloth: $99 USD (approx.), Leather: $149 USD (approx.).

Book 2. Large Bible. A hard cover Bible; front and back covers separated from the binding; loose pages.

Suggested Repair: Front and back covers replaced with new binding board, repair book block, new spine,

gauze, and headbands, new end papers with archival paper (necessary).

Cost to repair: Cloth: $90 USD (approx.), $240 USD (approx.).

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

The Soleil Bookbindery works with professional equipment. The Challenge Cutter (below) is used to cut stacks of paper or to trim the edges of books. It is “hand pulled,” meaning that the power system operating it purely human. A more precise cut can be made with a hand pulled cutter than with an electrically powered cutter. REPAIR FEES

The Soleil Bookbindery has a palette of colors to choose from for your book repair. Book Repair fees are based on the distinguishing characteristics of the book that require repair. There are differences in every book that change the cost of the fee based on considerations specific to the type of binding, condition of the book’s cover, and whether the book will be rebound in cloth or leather. If the book has loose pages and the text block needs repair, these also affect the cost of the repair fee.

Below are average prices for a book to be repaired at The Soleil Bookbindery. Please note that the prices listed below may or may not be accurate for your specific book. Every book is different but we will always try to ensure that your repair is within your budget.
